The Black Canyon Animal Sanctuary (BCAS) a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization was founded in 2009 by Debbie and David Faulkner on their 40 ac ranch in Western Colorado. A state of the art animal shelter facility was constructed and operated as the largest animal shelter in Delta County Colorado for 9 years. Over 2000 dogs came through the shelter doors. The shelter was closed in August of 2018 due to the escalation of David’s Alzheimer’s disease. The remaining dogs were personally adopted by the Faulkner’s where they will live out the remainder of their lives. In September of 2024 David succumbed to his disease, but Debbie continues to administer all Black Canyon Animal Sanctuary programs..
In 2011 BCAS created the Silver Whiskers Program and it continues to operate today. The program matches senior clients with companion senior dogs and cats. If the financial needs of the client dictate the program pays for all of the expenses associated with pet ownership..

Receiving an astronomical vet bill is never a welcome surprise, but unfortunately, these pop-up expenses are a part of pet ownership. We’re all human, and sometimes the funds aren’t there, which can leave you scrambling. BCAS created a fundraising network to help qualified pet owners, on a case-by-case basis, in these situations. All funds raised are paid directly to the veterinary clinic that performed services.
BCAS is an integral part of a large community outreach program, through social networking, that assists in rehoming pets, aids in finding lost pets and locating owners of found pets.
The Silver Whiskers Program matches senior humans with senior companion dogs or cats and if finances dictate the program pays for all costs associated with pet ownership.
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
The client is interviewed to make sure they can properly care for a pet. If qualified a dog or cat (their choice) is matched appropriately.
A volunteer Animal Advocate is assigned to each client to check in on a regular basis and to assist with anything the client is unable to do such as drive the pet to vet or grooming appointments.
Most clients are low income and qualify for assistance with all costs associated with pet ownership.
If the client becomes ill or has an emergency the volunteer is notified and the pet is fostered until the client recovers.
if the client can no longer care for the pet it is fostered until another placement in the program becomes available.
